Editing a page from the agent chat
Describe a change to a page's UI in the agent sidebar. You see what it affects before anything runs, and nothing changes until you approve. · Recommended
Once a page has generated UI, the agent sidebar is where you refine it. It uses the same thread as the page, so the conversation is still there tomorrow. This page assumes you have read Threads in the agent sidebar and Using the conversational agent. Editing a page's UI is part of the Starter plan gate that covers the agent panel. A page needs generated UI first: see Generating pages.
Open a page and talk
Open a page, then open the agent sidebar. The header shows the page as the thread's anchor. Type what you want in the one message box. There is no Edit mode and no Ask mode, and you do not choose between them. The agent reads your message and does one of three things:
- Answers. A question such as "What is this section for?" or "Which criteria does this page cover?" gets an answer. Nothing is staged.
- Proposes an edit. A clear request such as "Make the hero more dramatic" becomes an edit card for you to review.
- Asks one question. If the request could be a question or an action, or "this" does not point at anything, the agent asks one short question and waits. Answer it, and it uses your answer together with the original request.
Point at what you mean
Above the message box, the scope strip shows what your next message is about.
- Nothing pinned means the whole page.
- Section pills pin whole sections. Click a pill to pin that section, click it again to unpin it. Unpinning a section also clears any element chips inside it.
- Elements are pinned from the preview. Hold Alt and click an element, or switch on Pin in the preview toolbar and click. A chip appears in the strip. Click the chip's menu to Broaden to section or Broaden to page.
A dashed chip is provisional. It is replaced by your next click, and it becomes a normal chip once you start typing. When you pin something, the edit applies to exactly that scope; the agent will not widen it. Pins clear after you send a message.
If you pin something with the sidebar closed, it opens.
The confirm card
An edit never runs straight away. The agent shows a card with:
- the page and the sections the edit will change;
- the acceptance criteria bound to those sections;
- criteria that depend on them and may need a fresh review;
- other pages the change could touch;
- any elements you pointed at.
Choose Proceed to apply the edit or Cancel to drop it. The card says "Applying" while the edit runs and the result appears in the thread when it finishes. If an edit fails, the result has a Try again button that stages a fresh card. It does not run on its own.
You can also reply "yes" to approve the one plan waiting in the thread.
Expressive design
On eligible plans the scope strip has an Expressive switch. Standard edits keep the page's existing look. Expressive lets the agent take bolder visual liberties. The setting is remembered in your browser and is fixed when the card is staged, and an expressive card is badged as such. To change your mind, cancel the card and ask again with the switch the way you want it. If your plan does not include Expressive, the switch is not shown.
Skip the routing with /edit
Type /edit followed by what you want, for example /edit make the hero more dramatic. The agent does not decide whether you meant a question; it stages the edit card straight away, using whatever you have pinned and your Expressive setting. You still approve it on the card.
/edit needs a page open in the sidebar's view and a page with generated UI. If either is missing, you get a message saying what to do and nothing is staged.
Undoing an edit
There is no undo button on the result. Every applied edit is one change in the project's history, so you can review it and revert it there, across all the sections it touched. See Viewing history and Reverting changes.
Good to know
- An edit request can be up to 2000 characters.
- Two edits close together queue and run one after the other.
- In the demo project the sidebar is read-only, so you cannot edit pages there.
